Monte San Savino, on the western side of the Aretine Valdichiana, opposite Cortona and nestled on a hill overlooking the valley of the Esse stream, stands Monte San Savino, an ancient village where several signs of Etruscan civilization have been found. The town's history followed the events involving the Guelf and Ghibelline factions over the centuries. The latter prevailed, bringing the village under the control of the Ubertini, lords of Arezzo, until 1306 when the town came under Florentine and Guelf jurisdiction. In 1337, Monte San Savino passed under the dominion of Perugia, then under that of Siena, and then, in 1384, again under that of Florence, which sent a podestà and vicars for the administration of justice.

It was an important Etruscan center, as evidenced by the ancient settlements characterized by 2 km of walls dating back to the 5th century BC. It is a very picturesque village due to its typically medieval architecture, with ancient palaces, narrow streets and cobblestones, small artisan shops, and typical Tuscan trattorias.
